Our Basic Knifemaking Class is a hands-on, six-evening experience that takes you through the entire knifemaking process from forging to the final sharpened blade. Whether you've never swung a hammer before or you've been looking for an opportunity to learn more about the craft, this class is designed to give you plenty of hands-on instruction and shop time.
Classes are kept small and personal, giving you plenty of opportunities to ask questions, work directly with Josh, and get individual help throughout your build.
 
Your Six-Night Build
Evening 1 – Forging
Fire up the forge! You'll begin with your steel and learn the basics of forging as you hammer your blade into shape.
Evening 2 – Sanding & Heat Treat
Begin cleaning up and refining your forged blade before learning about the heat-treatment process that gives your blade the hardness it needs.
Evening 3 – Blade Sanding
It's time to put in the work! You'll continue sanding and refining your blade, working toward the finish and profile of your completed knife.
Evening 4 – Guard Fit-Up
Learn how to fit the guard, paying attention to the small details that make a handmade knife come together.
Evening 5 – Handle Fit & Glue-Up
Choose and fit your handle material, prepare everything for assembly, and glue your handle together.
Evening 6 – Handle Shaping, Polishing & Sharpening
Bring it all together! You'll shape and finish your handle, polish your completed knife, and learn how to put the final edge on your blade.

Six evenings total
By the end of the class, you'll have experienced the complete process of creating a handmade knife—and you'll walk out of the shop with a finished knife that you forged, fitted, shaped, finished, and sharpened yourself.
Come with a friend, spouse, or family member, or come on your own and meet other people interested in knifemaking and the trade. No previous knifemaking experience is required. We'll teach you the process, answer your questions, and help you through each step of your build.
